MOTIVATION

Following the world-wide trend of scientific events on Distributed Software Development (DSD), this workshop, I WDDS (in Portuguese: Workshop de Desenvolvimento Distribuído de Software), aims to be a forum for researchers and developers to discuss their experiences facilitating the adoption, evaluation, and execution of distributed software development projects in Brazil. Authors are invited to submit scientific papers describing research results and experience reports. Papers are welcome, specially those which bring future views or long-term approaches, methods, theoretical frameworks and other aspects related to DDS research. Papers offering an interdisciplinary view of DSD are also welcome.

Software development is typically a collaborative activity in which experts from different domains work together to produce a software artifact. This is necessary because current software systems require different qualities including availability, persistence, and distribution. More recently, due largely to economic considerations, software development became more complex because engineers from different countries and continents need to collaborate in global software development (GSD) efforts—software projects that span countries, time zones, and even continents. However, these projects bring additional problems to this collaborative endeavor: the geographical distance and the associated time-zone differences; cultural, organizational, and process issues; as well as language problems. Empirical studies show the difficulties represent slower processes in software development.

The new paradigm of software development is already a reality in Brazil. Currently, we find companies in a state with their branch offices involved with software development in other states. Besides, a number of multinational companies have making activities of software development in Brazil. To deal with the difficulties behind of the software development distributing activities, several approaches have been proposed, including collaborative tools and software process models regarding the new scenary. In general way, the proposed solutions are presented in a variety of manners.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Case studies from DSD projects;
- Tool-support;
- Communication, collaboration and coordination in DSD;
- Project management in DSD, including risk management, portfolio management, human resources, etc;
- Requirements Engineering;
- Software maintenance and evolution in DSD;
- Software Development Environments in DSD;
- Software Quality and Maturity Models for DSD;
- Reports on industrial experiences presenting lessons learned;
- Business models for DSD (internal offshoring, offshore outsourcing, outsourcing);
- Management of the variety of DSD Projects (culture, technical, social and organizational perspectives);
- Teaching distributed and global software development;

FORMAT AND PAPER SUBMISSION

Two types of submissions are expected:
- Technical papers;
- Experience reports on industrial case studies.

Papers submitted to the workshop must be unpublished original work. The papers can be written either in Portuguese or in English and will be judged according to their adequacy to workshop scope, relevance, technical soundness and originality. Papers should state clearly their relation to previous work, mainly to previous published work of the own authors. Theoretical papers should emphasize the contribution to the practice. Papers on empirical experiments should describe the used methods and interpret qualitatively and quantitatively their results. Papers describing preliminary work and ongoing research are also eligible.

Papers must be no longer than 8 pages, including all the figures, references, and appendices. Accepted submissions are going to be presented at the workshop technical sessions. All submissions must be in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF), following the guidelines established by the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) available at: http://www.sbc.org.br (In the link "Eventos").
